SIA: How did you get into the security industry?

Lon Bazelais: I entered the security industry by introduction of a friend and colleague and began my path as a Security Sales Executive. I quickly found my niche and found that this industry suited my interests and passions, and I continually sought out opportunities to enhance my experience and knowledge. I love to watch technology improve and protect the lives of individuals and corporations. It really is fascinating.

SIA: What’s your prediction for the biggest trend that will take place in the security industry in 2012? How about 5 years from now?

Lon Bazelais: My prediction is that we will continue to see growth in IP systems as industries and individuals become more aware and knowledgeable of the power and functionality of these systems. This surge in growth will increase as equipment and system prices continue to reduce.

In addition, 2012 has proved to show a cross industry increase for clients and manufacturers alike in use and necessity of mobile devices, such as smart phones and tablets. I believe this move to mobility will continue and gain speed because clients, whether they are residential or commercial, want access to their systems for convenience, security and consistent contact. Manufacturers arriving to the mobile applications party late will need to implement and release these client friendly apps and those that do have them will release upgraded versions of their app with more features. If they haven’t released them by now, the access control manufacturers are going to get into the app world as well. I’m looking forward to the day I will be able to offer my clientele the option to open up doors with the swipe of a finger on their mobile device, and the way the application industry is growing and enhancing, I would not be surprised if this system is available by year’s end.

The fight for control of the residential consumer’s network is under way. Companies, such as cable and data providers, that are already ahead of the curve and have made inroads to residential homes are going to be trying to lock up as much of that network as possible. For the security industry, that is going to mean that these companies are going to be looking at the security portion of that network and how they can grab that revenue. In five years we should have new answers and Industry Leaders in capturing recurring revenue as acquisitions and consolidation take place.

SIA: What do you enjoy about your role?

Lon Bazelais: The growth that we have seen as a company can be directly related to the great relationships that we have built up with our clients and for me, building individual relationships on mutual trust, respect and reliability has been the most enjoyable aspect of my role as co-founder and senior partner. My personal job satisfaction comes from taking our clients from the initial meeting all the way through the process and handing over a fully functional system that fulfills their security needs and represents our partnership.

SIA: What does your organization receive from membership in SIA that you’d like to share with others?

Lon Bazelais: SIA has provided numerous helpful resources and services, especially through Education and Training, that allows us to stay current on ever growing and new technologies, policies and procedures that are part of this industry. That, in turn, affords us the ability to compete with the larger organizations in our market.

Optex Helps Riverdale Neighborhood House Prevent Trespassing and
Promote Community Safety

Chino, California, July 29, 2011— When Riverdale Neighborhood House, a nonprofit community center in northwest Bronx, wanted to secure their neighborhood pool from trespassing, property damage, theft and unauthorized use, they turned to Grid Squared Systems (www.gridsquared.com) for a perimeter security system that would deter violators and alert authorities.

Grid Squared Systems, an Optex Certified System Integrator, teamed with Optex (www.optexamerica.com) to recommend a practical, cost-effective, and easy-to-implement solution based on Optex’s Redwall passive infrared (PIR) motion sensors. The sensors use battery-operated wireless transmitters to communicate with a central station through a wireless receiver that, if an intrusion is detected, sends an email message and alerts the authorities.

“The Redwall system gives Riverdale a simple, yet effective solution,” says Chris Adams, Optex’s Eastern regional sales manager. “The advantage of wireless connectivity is that it eliminates the need for costly wiring and decreases installation time without compromising performance.”

“The Redwall system was simple to install and set up,” says Lon Bazelais, senior partner at Grid Squared. “Optex provides the right products we needed to ensure full coverage, even in areas with foliage and other obstacles.”

“The system has not only delivered the performance we needed, it proved cost-effective and easy to use,” says Daniel Eudene, executive director at Riverdale. “We’ve already deterred several intruders from taking a night swim, which protects them as well as our organization and program participants.”

The installed system uses three different Redwall models to satisfy different dimensional needs in coverage. Redwall SIP-3020WFi sensors, with a coverage range of 100’ x 65’, are used along the short sides of the pool, while Model SIP-404WFi sensors with a range of 130’ x 13’ cover the long sides. A Model VX-402Ri sensor, with 40’ x 40’ coverage, secures the pool’s entryway. The sensors are designed to integrate easily with security cameras, giving Riverdale a simple upgrade path if the need arises.

Talon Air Uses Optex Redscan Perimeter Warning System to Prevent Damage to Aircraft

Chino, California, July 18, 2011—To prevent the potential for accidents and costly repairs to aircraft being moved in hangars, Talon Air (www.TalonAirJets.com), a full service private jet charter and aircraft management company based at Republic Airport (FRG) in Farmingdale, New York, has installed a unique perimeter-warning system in two of its hangars. Using the Redscan laser-scan detectors from Optex (www.optexamerica.com), the system warns pilots and hangar operators when a plane comes within eight feet of the hangar walls.

“Talon Air puts a premium on maintaining clean, safe, and state-of-the-art facilities,” says Adam Katz, founder, president, and CEO of Talon Air. “The Optex Redscan laser-scan system is a cost-effective and powerful way to reduce the likelihood of damage to aircraft or facilities while allowing personnel to move freely throughout the hangar. The system enhances our reputation as a leader in the industry.”

The goal was to eliminate any risk of damage to aircraft during exit or entry and provide aircraft owners whose planes are managed by Talon with value-added safety measures. The system should also reduce insurance premiums. An important feature of the scanning system was to ensure that aircraft mechanics and hangar personnel have access to the perimeter area. The system detects only objects eight feet off the ground. The scanning system uses four Redscan RLS-3060 laser scanners, which detect a moving object’s size, speed, and distance from the detector. The RLS-3060 creates a 200-foot wide detection area that functions like an invisible wall. Any object within the laser’s span will set off strobes and sounds.

Grid Squared Systems (www.gridsquared.com), an Optex Redscan Certified System Integrator, was selected by Talon to propose a system solution that would fit their unique safety requirements. Grid Squared worked with Optex to devise the best solution. “The Redscan system was selected on both its technical merits and its ease of use,” says Lon Bazelais, senior partner at Grid Squared. “We had the system installed and running in minimal time without disruption to Talon operations.”

“The Redscan system provides Talon with the flexibility to tailor the scanning area to increase safety without interfering with day-to-day operations,” says Chris Adams, Optex’s Eastern regional sales manager. “The Redscan in the hands of an experienced and certified integrator such as Grid Squared can solve unique problems and be applied in new and innovative ways.”

NetAXS-123 is Helping Dealers and Integrators Expand
Into Previously Untapped Markets

LOUISVILLE, Ky., March 31, 2011 – Honeywell (NYSE:HON) today announced it has seen a 30-percent monthly increase in the number of dealers and integrators using its NetAXS-123 access control offering since the solution’s launch in July 2010. The company says the numbers reflect a growing trend of security dealers and integrators introducing access control technology to small-to-mid-size customers who have a limited number of doors to secure.

In addition, more than 60 percent of dealers currently selling NetAXS-123 have purchased more units based on their initial success with the web-based system, which is designed to make access control simpler and more affordable.

Honeywell’s NetAXS-123 is a one-, two- or three-door system that completes Honeywell’s portfolio of NetAXS™ web-based access control. NetAXS-123 enables dealers — including intrusion dealers selling little to no access control — to answer the need for single-door applications while allowing them to position themselves to grow with their customers. And, by integrating with Honeywell’s WIN-PAK® PRO Central Station software, security dealers and central monitoring stations can remotely manage NetAXS-123 and generate recurring monthly revenue (RMR).

“NetAXS-123 offers the optimal combination of features and capabilities that we need — including scalability, competitive pricing and simple installation requirements — in order to provide our customers with the right kind of access control technology,” said Lon Bazelais, senior partner of New York-based integrator Grid Squared Systems.

Grid Squared Systems is currently using NetAXS-123 to secure an airplane hangar for a private charter jet company, which it also rents out to other airline companies. The private charter jet company sought a cost-effective way to secure access to the hangar, which has a limited number of doors, while enabling each subleasing company to easily obtain access with the right credentials. Grid Squared Systems was able to meet this need with NetAXS-123 based on its scalability and ability to easily add or subtract panels for a reasonable price.

Tennessee-based Guardian Systems had a similar experience when it installed NetAXS-123 at a high-end bolt manufacturing facility that sought to secure four of its 16 facility doors. Instead of a traditional eight-door system, Guardian was able to provide the right amount of security without overselling.

“We came in thousands under the competition while still meeting the customer’s needs,” said Jason Tolleson, senior commercial sales, Guardian Systems. “In the end, we won the job based on both the price and capabilities of NetAXS-123.”

“The small-to-mid-sized commercial market has traditionally been untapped by dealers due to the lack of available — and appealing — entry level access control,” said Erica Nedland, channel marketing manager, Honeywell Systems. “Traditional access control tends to offer more than what many customers need, but NetAXS-123 answers the market call for single-door applications, and introduces new ways for dealers to expand their business.”

NetAXS-123 is currently available globally. Honeywell will demonstrate the system at the ISC West 2011 show in April. For more information, visit www.honeywellaccess.com.

Manhattan, NY—Richard Kowitt knows all too well the challenges of making the transition from traditional home automation to interactive business media. These days small businesses “Especially financial industry” is always on the cusp of technology when it comes to automation and business media. You can find CNN and various business analysis programs displayed on large screen HD plasmas in almost every financial institution. Kowitt states “ Years ago it was only large corporate offices that you would see the need for this type of automation, with a new age of business almost every office now has streaming media, HD cable TV and fully automated conference rooms. It’s just a growing trend”

Vnesheconomank is a perfect example. They requested a design to provide enriched media solutions to create dynamic atmospheres that enhance their brands and consumer experiences. “Not only is the client security conscience by maintaining their doors with a web based access control system but they are also technology driven for media. There are HD TV’s placed in conference rooms and large offices as well as individual offices that have the capability to bring cable channels right to their existing computers on their desks.”

Vnesheconombank chose as its exclusive security and audio-visual integrator Grid Squared Systems based in Metro area, an industry leader in designing, installing and servicing security and surveillance, telecom/data cabling, computer goods sales and service, and residential and business automation technologies
